After Dental Veneers: Care Instructions

Share

First 24–48 Hours

The bonding cement used to attach your veneers needs time to reach full strength. Take extra care in the first two days.

  • Avoid staining foods and drinks for 48 hours — no tea, coffee, red wine, turmeric, or dark curries. The bonding cement can absorb colour while it is still curing.
  • Avoid very hard or crunchy foods — do not bite into apples, carrots, crusty bread, or anything hard for the first 48 hours.
  • Do not smoke for at least 48 hours — tobacco discolours the fresh bonding margins.
  • Mild sensitivity to cold or pressure is normal for a few days and will settle as the tooth adapts.
  • If temporary veneers were placed at a previous appointment, treat them with extra care — avoid sticky and hard foods until your permanent veneers are fitted.

Ongoing Care

Veneers require the same daily care as natural teeth, with a few additional precautions to protect the porcelain.

  • Brush twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste — avoid whitening pastes, which scratch the veneer surface.
  • Floss daily around each veneer. Pay special attention to the gumline where the veneer meets the tooth — plaque at this margin can cause decay underneath.
  • Use a fluoride mouthwash nightly to protect the underlying enamel.
  • Cut hard foods into small pieces rather than biting directly — apples, raw carrots, hard bread.
  • If you grind your teeth at night, wear your custom night guard every night — grinding cracks veneers over time.

What to Avoid Long-Term

  • Do not use your teeth as tools — no opening bottles, tearing tape, or biting nails.
  • Avoid biting ice — thermal shock can crack porcelain.
  • Avoid abrasive toothpastes — they dull the polished surface over time.
  • Reduce habitual consumption of dark pigmented drinks (chai, coffee, red wine) — rinse with water after drinking them.
  • Do not smoke — tobacco stains veneer margins and accelerates gum recession around them.

When to Contact Us

  • A veneer comes off — do not panic, do not try to glue it yourself. Store it safely and call us — it can usually be re-bonded.
  • A chip or crack in a veneer — even a small one should be evaluated promptly before it worsens.
  • Sensitivity that increases rather than decreasing after the first week.
  • A dark line appearing at the gumline along a veneer — this may indicate recession or a gap at the margin.
  • Bite feels uneven — a simple adjustment at the clinic resolves this quickly.
