After Oral Surgery: Dos and Don'ts

Share
DO
DON'T
Bite firmly on the gauze pad placed over the surgical area for 30-45 minutes
Don't spit, suck through straws, or rinse vigorously for the first 24 hours — this can dislodge the blood clot
Apply an ice pack on the cheek near the surgical site (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off) for the first 24 hours
Don't smoke or use tobacco for at least 72 hours — it severely delays healing and increases infection risk
Eat soft, cool foods like ice cream, yogurt, smoothies, and lukewarm soups
Don't eat hot, spicy, or crunchy foods for 3-5 days
Take prescribed medications on time, including antibiotics and pain relievers
Don't engage in strenuous physical activity for 48-72 hours
Rest and keep your head elevated for the first 24 hours
Don't touch or probe the surgical area with your tongue or fingers
Gently rinse with warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon salt in a glass of warm water) starting 24 hours after surgery
Don't skip any prescribed medications, even if you feel better
Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated
Don't consume alcohol for at least 48 hours, especially if taking medications
Maintain oral hygiene by gently brushing other teeth, avoiding the surgical area
Don't ignore increasing pain, swelling, or bleeding after 48 hours — contact the clinic
